On May 20, 1982 Illinois State Police Trooper Bernard Delano “Bernie” Skeeters was killed in the line of duty. Thirty-three years later, to the day, State Senator Sam McCann (R-Carlinville) has passed legislation honoring Skeeters' sacrifice.
“Trooper Skeeters dedicated his life to making the world a safer place, and made the ultimate sacrifice in doing so” said Senator McCann. “His family has waited long enough to see his sacrifice remembered, and I am humbled to have received unanimous support to end their wait.”
On May 20, 1982, Trooper Skeeters was killed in a three car accident on Interstate 55 near Williamsville, when a tractor-trailer slammed into his squad car from behind, forcing it into a paint truck.
Senator McCann’s legislation would rename the Stuttle Road Overpass in Williamsville as the “Trooper Bernard D. Skeeters Memorial Overpass.”
Senate Joint Resolution 17 (SJR17) now heads to the Illinois House for approval in that chamber.
