State Senator Tom Rooney (R-Rolling Meadows) was recently named as the Illinois Chamber of Commerce’s “Outstanding Freshman Senator,” underscoring his dedication to pro-business growth and job creation throughout the state.
“The fact is, Illinois cannot move forward without the support, success and growth of a strong business community,” said Sen. Rooney. “I am proud and honored to be a vocal advocate for the job-creators and economic drivers of Illinois that depend on lawmakers to be their voice in the General Assembly.”
The biennial award is given to one freshman state senator and one freshman state representative who have demonstrated their support of Illinois’ business community. Scoring 95 percent in pro-business votes since taking office, Senator Rooney was named as this year’s 2018 “Outstanding Freshman Senator.”
“We rely on local businesses for so much in Illinois, creating economic opportunities, keeping people in-state and generating revenue so that our communities thrive,” said Sen. Rooney. “In return, our employers should be able to depend on their representatives in state government to take a stand for legislation that supports and protects their interests.”
The recognition is part of the Chamber’s biennial “Champion of Free Enterprise” awards, given to lawmakers who support further economic opportunities for Illinoisans through their voting records. To receive the honor, a lawmaker must have received an average of 85 percent or better voting record over the previous two General Assemblies with the Illinois Chamber.
“The Chamber’s Legislative Ratings lets Illinois families, small businesses, and taxpayers know if legislators voted in favor of private sector job creation and a stronger economy,” said Todd Maisch, president and CEO, Illinois Chamber of Commerce.
The Illinois Chamber tracks legislation and voting records important to the state’s business community, grading legislators based on their support of pro-business issues during the two-year legislative session. According to the Chamber, the average voting GPA for the 100th General Assembly was 49 percent.
The Illinois Chamber is expected to present the “Outstanding Freshman Senator” award to Senator Rooney in-district in the coming weeks.
